Out-of-This-World Bacon BLT with a Bold Kick
BLTs are simple and always hit the spot, and that’s why we love them. But this Bacon BLT takes things up a level, better yet, gold status. I can’t get enough of it, and guess what, no more bacon falling out of your sandwich. With a little kick that sneaks up on you, it’s a flavor you’ll keep coming back to again and again. Trust me, once you make this, it’ll be your go-to when you want something quick, satisfying, and just a little out of the ordinary.
Why I Love BLTs
Growing up, my BLTs were always simple, and I fell in love with them, with crunchy iceberg lettuce, tangy Miracle Whip, juicy tomatoes, and of course, salty, crispy, smoky bacon. Plus, they were quick and easy to make. Over the years, I haven’t strayed too far from the classic, just a few little extras to turn it into a real special sandwich, one that makes you go “mmm” as you eat. And if you’re really hungry, you can always beef it up for a double-decker version. More bacon, more mmmms. Now, let me tell you what you’ll need to make this Bacon BLT.
What Goes Into This Out-of-This-World Bacon BLT
This Bacon BLT keeps things simple but with a little extra to make it unforgettable. Here’s a look at the ingredients and why each one matters:
- • Bacon: Of course, we have to start with the bacon. For me, it’s always pork bacon, though you can use turkey bacon if you like. You can experiment with others, but it won’t have the same mouthfeel. This is going to carry most of the flavor, so pick your favorite. Thick or thin, it’s up to you, but I like one that crisps up really well.
- • Sauce: The classic sauce debate, mayo or Miracle Whip, is all about preference. I use both, and I add a prepared horseradish sauce for a little kick. Some brands are spicier than others, and you know I don’t mind a little heat. This sauce really makes the sandwich pop.
- • Lettuce: I stick with classic iceberg lettuce. It gives the sandwich that perfect crunch and lightness. Romaine or other types work if you love them, but iceberg adds that texture that makes every bite better.
- • Tomato: Any classic tomato works, like beefsteak or Roma. Fresh-picked is perfect. If the tomato is too juicy, remove some pulp to keep your sandwich crisp.
- • Avocado: I’ve grown to love avocado over the years. In this sandwich, it adds a creamy texture that contrasts beautifully with the salty bacon.
- • Onions: Raw onions, usually sweet or yellow, give the sandwich a nice bite and add another layer of flavor.
Why I Love This Horseradish Mayo Sauce
I love how well the horseradish sauce adds a little kick to the BLT. If you haven't had horseradish before, it's not the spice of a hot pepper. Instead, it brings a sharp, tangy heat that wakes up the flavor. You might recognize it from wasabi that you eat with sushi. Most of the time, what you are getting is horseradish instead of true wasabi. Of course, you can adjust the amount to your taste.
I like a half-and-half ratio with mayo for a creamy sauce that still has a gentle bite. There is no need for extra salt because the bacon already brings plenty. A little squeeze of lemon juice brightens the flavor. I have used both bottled and fresh horseradish, and of course, fresh will bring that extra zip.
This sauce is versatile. It pairs beautifully with roast beef as well, especially in a bacon and roast beef sandwich. It adds a layer of flavor that makes the sandwich truly memorable.
Choosing the Right Bread for Your BLT
I’m classic when it comes to the bread. I love a soft, white bread, but of course you can change it up to your favorite. My go-to is a good farmer’s white bread. It’s soft, sturdy, and holds up perfectly to all that bacon and sauce.
If you like, you can also try a lightly toasted sourdough. For something extra special, put it on a toasted sub roll and brush it with a little garlic butter. Keep the garlic light so it doesn’t overpower the sandwich. The bread you choose really makes a difference in texture and flavor, so pick what you love.
Why I Weave the Bacon for This Bacon BLT
1. The bacon weave matters
This is important to me. I used to hate biting into a BLT and ending up with no bacon in that bite. Not here. Weaving the bacon helps hold everything together so you get bacon in every single bite of this Bacon BLT.
2. Cut the bacon to fit your bread
I usually cut my bacon slices in half before weaving. If you are using larger bread, just cut the bacon to match the size of the bread. It does not have to be perfect. It just needs to fit the sandwich.
3. Bake it until crunchy
Once the bacon is woven, it goes straight into the oven. I love a crunchy bacon because it adds texture and keeps the sandwich from getting soggy.
4. Make the sauce while it bakes
While the bacon is in the oven, mix up the horseradish mayo sauce. I like mine with a little more horseradish mayo and a little more lemon juice for extra flavor and brightness.
5. Double it if needed
If you are feeding a family, go ahead and double the sauce. I also like to make extra bacon squares because I love to double decker this Bacon BLT. More bacon is never a bad thing.

- Assemble the sandwich: Lightly toast your bread. Spread the horseradish mayo on each slice. Layer lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, and bacon. Add more mayo on top if desired.

Notes
How I Build My Bacon BLT Sandwich
I like to slather the sauce on both sides of the bread. That way you get that flavor in every bite, not just the middle of the sandwich.
The bacon goes on next. Sometimes I double the bacon, and sometimes I turn it into a double decker by adding a slice of bread in the middle, kind of like a club sandwich. It really just depends on how hungry I am.
After that, I layer on the lettuce, tomato, avocado, and raw onion. There is no right or wrong way here. Build it how you like it. That is the beauty of a Bacon BLT. Simple, satisfying, and always good.
